Finding enough slide rule cases for all the thousands of case-impaired slide rule sets out there is an ongoing nightmare, so once again, we decided to quit fooling around, and just GO MAKE THEM. This of course required that we first design a workable case (no trivial task), and then find a company to manufacture them economically. In keeping with slide rule traditions, we used a classic, time honored design technique (CAD guys, eat your heart out - pencil and paper) which allowed us to quickly go from concept to cases in just a few weeks with the help of Seamcraft. Here's an interim sample:

When we started this project, we identified several key issues:

The case had to fit properly, and accommodate all common duplex rules from Pickett N4's to K+E 4081-3's. By default, a smaller Mannheim rule would also fit, but could be loose.

There had to be enough room to get the rule in and out easily.

The flap and flap closure had to be rugged, and wear well, unlike many original cases. Original cases from virtually all makers had terrible flap problems, and constantly broke off, to the massive annoyance of the user.

The cases needed to have a built in ID window, like the one in the Versalog case, to avoid marking (and ruining) the case with names and initials as in the past.

The case had to actually protect the rule, and be padded to avoid glass cursor damage. It also needed to wear well, and be durable without discoloring.

The cases had to look good, and be of high quality, preferably from a domestic maker.

And of course, they had to be affordable, to make them practical.

After three prototypes, and numerous test fits and color samples, we think the Sphere Duplex Case is ready for prime time. The 100% padded case has a tough nylon cover, inside and out, fully bound edges, an ID window, and velcro flap closure. It is a rich burgundy/cordovan color, like the original Versalog case, and has black trim. The back has a rugged D-ring anchor for belt loop use, and the tapered design accomodates an astonishing range of rules well, and still allows easy removal.

K+E Duplex Rules (408X and 4181 styles)
K+E Deci-lon rules
Dietzgen Duplex 17XX rules
POST Versalogs
Hemmi 250/260 series Duplex rules
Pickett N3, N4, N16, N500, N800 rules

In addition, smaller rules, such as the Pickett N90X and N101X series, K+E and Dietzgen Mannheims, and Faber Castell Mannheims also fit well, but with a bit more side room, there's room for a pen or pencil too, if you want. Because these rules may be an inch to an inch and a half shorter, a small pad inserted into the bottom of the case gives an easier fit for quick removal.
