Hemmi Bamboo Slide Rule Manufacturing Company Ltd. (Hemmi Keisanjaku) in Japan produced a wide range of slide rules under their own SUN logo, and for makers around the world, including the famous POST Versalog, which can be seen here in its original Model 258 form. Hemmi made most of POST's rules from the 1930's on (except for a period during the second world war), rules for Lietz, and rules for Canada's Hughes-Owens and Geotec. Visual comparisons and country of origin markings also suggest they may have made plastic body rules for Steadtler-Mars, Sterling and Dietzgen.

Hemmi rules have a very distinctive style, with engraved and filled scales. They are very robust as a result, and do not wear out easily. Many of their rules that are more than 50-70 years old are still in wide circulation, and are still completely readable and work perfectly. Most of their rules have bamboo bodies, with laminated white celluloid scale faces. The unique non-warping and self-lubricating nature of bamboo, made these rules extremely popular, and long wearing. Hemmi later made plastic body rules (part numbers generally begin with P) which are also of very high quality, and were rebranded and sold by others outside of Japan. The Hemmi duplex cursor is an excellent design, and largely self-aligning, unlike virtually all other makes. Hemmi's slide rule designs always had many small features that were both ingenious and useful, making the rules a delight to use. When the full size rule number is followed by an 'L', it means the rule is provided in a leather case, otherwise it came in a two part hardboard case. Pocket rules normally came in a small leather case. Plastic body rules came in a two part plastic case.

Hemmi made rules for many special purposes, including civil engineering/surveying, chemical engineering, electronics, physics and mechanical engineering. Their special purpose rules, like the 266 electronics rule and 257L chemical rule are some of the best ever made, and are still highly sought after today as working rules. Their designs were very practical, and unlike north american makers, self documenting as much as possible in later plastic body designs, making them far easier to understand and use. Compared to the Pickett N16 for example (the rule Pickett promoted as an electronics rule), the Hemmi 266 is far easier to use, has many more useful electronic functions, and does a much better job of decimal keeping in the answers and set up.

Many people did not realize how many rules were actually made by Hemmi in Japan, as they did not market in north america under their own name. The very popular POST Versalog (1460) was often thought of as an American product. In reality, they were special Hemmi 258 (a 259 derivative) series duplex rules, and the pocket Versalog (1461) was a modified Hemmi 149A rule. During and after the second world war, Japanese products were not popular in the USA, and Hemmi was content to remain a background player, and continued to market via POST, Geotec and Hughes-Owens among others. Even after POST was taken over by Teledyne at the end of POST's operations, both the bamboo and plastic rules continued to be made by Hemmi in Japan.

Hemmi's plastic body rules often had striking color accents, with blue or green tinted slides and end braces with white bodies. Unlike some other makers, their plastic rules were as good in terms of craftsmanship and appearance as their bamboo body rules, and were often very complex designs. Hemmi still exists today in Japan, but makes hydraulic valves and related industrial products, still under the same name. They no longer make slide rules, but do have some old stock that can still be bought. Thanks to Mark Fletcher, we now have full details of Hemmi's 1958 sales catalog, which describes all their major rules and features in illustrated form.

A BI scale is employed in parallel with the CI scale to allow single setting operations for multiplication or division of squares or square root. The T and S scales have complimentary angles marked in red. With the P scale, cos theta and the square root of 1-X squared can also be calculated. The very wide Log Log scale range supports exponent calculations from 0.00005 to 22,000. The rule is also self documenting, with functions for each scale shown at the right hand side of the rule. Pocket Square/Circular Rule A compact 75mm/3 inch pocket square body, circular scale slide rule, with an unusual blue/green body scale, and a white rotating scale with finger grips along the outside edge. Virtually unknown here in North America, this Hemmi circular rule is very attractive and functional, with a very striking blue/green color scheme. Hemmi/Sun 2634 Miniature 5" Mannheim Rule CLICK for BIGGER PIC	5" Advanced Slide Rule Beautiful miniature bamboo rule and leather case, in an original Hemmi box with full manual. Has inch scale side ruler, unbreakable plastic cursor, reversible slide with 4 additional scales and rear cursor window. A very attractive rule, with more scales (includes folded scales and enhanced trig scales) than typically found on small rules. Regrettably, these boxes all are slightly crumpled, and the manuals and/or boxes are slightly foxed. The rules are still sealed in factory bags, but need to be wiped down with a damp cloth to remove the years of storage oxidation. Rules and cases are still wonderful, and not to be missed!
