Hughes Owens

Geotec

Canada

*The vast majority of slide rules sold by The Hughes-Owens Company, Limited in Canada were manufactured by Hemmi in Japan. This relationship began almost as soon as Hemmi began making slide rules - the 1914 Hughes-Owens catalogue featured Hemmi slide rules with laminated construction patented by Hemmi in Japan in 1912. In contrast, Post did not begin importing Hemmi slide rules into the United States until the early 1930's.

*The Hughes-Owens Company used catalogue numbers of the format 176x or 177x from 1914 through the mid-1960's. Examples or catalogue illustrations are known for every number within this range, except for 1769 and 1779.

*Sometime during 1964, Hughes-Owens changed the numbering system to a 7-digit number, with the format 341 3xxx.

*Sometime in late 1968 or early 1969, slide rules with the same model numbers were sold with the Geotec logo. It is not known whether Hughes-Owens sold or spun off the slide rule division to Geotec as a separate company, or whether Geotec was simply a brand name internal to Hughes-Owens.

*AZON purchased The Hughes-Owens Company, Limited in 1988.
