Blundell-Harling Ltd. B.R.L BLUNDELL RULES LIMITED Skip the INTRO, Go RIGHT to the Archive! The various incarnations of Blundell Rules Limited (BRL) originated in Luton in the UK as an effort to create ongoing post-war work for a machine shop created during WW2. They later moved to Weymouth in the UK in January of 1956 and refined their rule making techniques, with the British government as a prime customer. In January of 1964, BRL purchased the assets of W.H. Harling Limited of Clapton, London, and with it, a line of precision drawing instruments, T-squares and related items (Harling had previously made wooden slide rules, but dropped them in favor of its other instruments). The resulting company became Blundell-Harling, and stayed in Weymouth. The 1970's saw the decline of slide rule revenues, and the company, like many others, focused on other areas including various metric converters to aid in the national change to the metric system, boat navigation aids (still in production) and drafting and drawing materials. Some perrygrafs, slide charts, specialty slide rules and special graphical calculator designs are still made for the government, medical and industrial customers, and the company still exists and is operating today in the UK. Unlike other makers, BRL or BH focused mainly on synthetic materials construction right from the beginning, starting with Bakelite, then moving quickly to plastic (PVC-Polyvinyl Chloride) rule construction (US Geon and German Astralon, then Cobex and Darvic). There are a few early metal framed glass cursors, but most are made from Acrylic materials. Early rules are marked B.R.L for Blundell Rules Limited. Later rules are marked BLUNDELL. Their rules, even early ones, are very distinctive in design, and have some strong visual features like the bright yellow accent stripes on the 800 series. They also produced a rule of considerable interest to collectors, the elusive and seldom seen 'Pilot Balloon Rule'. This large rule has a very unique assortment of scales and cursors to compute the flight behavior of atmospheric 'pilot' balloons for the British government's weather services. From the name, I first thought it was an ancient rule for navigating a lighter-than-air ship, imagine my disappointment....plotting un-manned weather balloons. Sigh. Special THANKS to Ray Hems for the original catalog data, and to the Oughtred Society Journal (Spring 1998) article by Peter Soole for historical information on Blundell. Blundell Rules Ltd. Radiac No. 1 6665-110060 6665-110117 |
Radiation Effects Rule Radiac No. 1
The set includes the rule with changeable disks, and the carry pouch, both are new, perfect condition. Full instructions are on the rule reverse side. Interestingly, while it allows you to elegantly compute your radiatioon dosage, it does not say how much is fatal. An unfortunate oversight, if you should happen to really need this rule. | CLICK for bigger PIC! CLICK for bigger PIC! |
