The Eugene DIETZGEN Company

The Eugene Dietzgen Co. supplied slide rules in the USA and elsewhere under its brand name, and also (like K&E) supplied many other drafting and drawing supplies, papers and tools. The main factory and head office was in Chicago, Illinois, and branch offices were in New York, San Francisco, New Orleans, Pittsburgh and Los Angeles. Dietzgen also supplied numerous rules made by Faber-Castell in Germany under the Dietzgen label in the USA.

These rules closely resemble K+E products, and can be easily mistaken for them, especially some early Mannheim and duplex rules. It is common for a collector to find some of these older rules in cases by the other maker, or with cursors from the other maker, due to physical similarities. Dietzgen rules were generally made on a mahogany core with white celluloid scale overlays, and engraved and filled scales, some all celluloid and plastic rules were also made, as well as a few token aluminum and bamboo rules, re-branded from other manufacturers. Dietzgen made several rules with some unique names, such as the MANIPHASE rule, which is a Mannheim rule with a "K" scale and "CI" scale added. They also made a PHILLIPS rule, which is a Mannheim rule with a reciprocal A/B scale added, called an "R" scale, and what other manufacturers call a "K" scale (cube scale), but which Dietzgen called an "E"scale, which is read against the C/D scales.

Interestingly, Dietzgen survived the North American shake out in the drafting/slide rule business, and is still in business today, specializing in drafting, copy and diazo papers and film. They have no data, rules, parts or other slide rule materials, but you can see them here:

Notes: Sizes are given as the SCALE LENGTH, not the over-all size of the rule itself.

Most earlier rules are made of mahogany, with celluloid scales. Later rules included some plastic rules made in the USA, and some Geroplast rules made by Faber-Castell in Germany. There are also several Dietzgen marked aluminum rules of unknown origin.

The 1734 Microglide rule is the most famous Dietzgen rule, and incorporates a novel teflon slide bearing for smoother action. It was their main competitive offering against the K+E 4081-3 and POST 1460 Versalog. The orange/yellow box was the trademark of Dietzgen in later years for both slide rules and drafting instruments.
