 Information About Pickett Slide Rules Skip the INTRO, Go RIGHT to the CATALOG! The rare super-duper Pickett Bat-Case (not the official name), holds a large body rule (N3T/N4ES, etc.) and various other super-geek weapons...CLICK for a bigger PIC! Looks like it was made for Batman, only comes in black.   Pickett & Eckel, Inc., designed and sold
their slide rules by categorizing end users (marketing research)
and matching the type and number of scales, and subsequent price,
to those customers. Early literature provided a matrix of slide
rule model versus intended user group, from secondary school up
to the professional engineering community.
The following list is what Pickett & Eckel
(based in Chicago. IL) and later Pickett (based in Santa Barbara, CA) offered during their production as standard products, but does not include every custom rule. Model numbers initially had no suffixes, and were white, then later had suffixes of either "ES"
or "T" denoting Eye Saver yellow color or Traditional white, respectively. There were also a few rules made in "MF" clear Metal Finish, mainly as promotional rules. Later rules had an "N" prefix (new), and improved cursor design, along with square corners, and in some cases, slightly altered scale layouts.
Pickett listed their slide rules as 10 inch or pocket, but was
inconsistent as to what this measurement actually meant. A 10
inch rule was physically 12 inches in length, but the scales were
10 inches. The pocket rule was physically 6 inches in length with
5 inch scales. However, Pickett literature would refer to 10 inch
and 6 inch slide rules! At least one 8 inch model is known to exist (808-T), but rules longer than 10/12 inches do not appear to have been made.
The earliest Pickett metal rules were made with Magnesium alloy bodies (models 2, 3, 4, and 1000), but production switched to Aluminum in the 40's. Pickett produced many custom rules in both aluminum and plastic, including rules for accident scene skid estimation, aerial photography, purchasing, fuel sizes and weights, hydraulic valve sizing, and turbine engine analysis to name just a few. They also made some promotional variations with stock rules like the N200, with custom logos and colors, but the rule identification did not change, making for some confusion afterwards. There is at least one green rule known, a modified N200ES, with no special identification. Pickett also offered some circular rules including models 108-112 which are simply rebranded Japanese rotorules, also sold by SINCO (Scientific Instruments) in white, and marketed in the USA by Pickett mainly in yellow. They made their own 101C circular rule, but it is a very simple design.
Pricing varied by retailer, however Pickett
did offer demonstration slide rules in 4 foot and 7 foot lengths:
a 4 foot rule sold for $15 and the 7 foot rule was $25 in 1960. These
were available with scales to match models N4, N803, and N1010
with the Ln scale added. These large rules were available free
to schools which ordered 24 or more slide rules!

Very nice rule, shown with the gold embossed black belting leather case. This is a powerful lightweight pocket rule, with performance equal to a much larger straight rule. Rotating dual cursors on one side (with the scale ID's on the cursor), single cursor on the reverse. 5 Inch Log Log Duplex Circular One of the most sought after Pickett aluminum circular slide rules, in the popular ES (eye saver) yellow color. Complete with black belting leather case with gold logo, and miniature manual that fits inside the case. Has tracked duplex cursor, (with scale markings), and rotating disks on both sides. The unusual two line cursor permits fast circle area calculations between A and D (set the long cursor on D to the diameter, A will show the area on the short cursor). This is a very powerful pocket rule, with performance equal to a much larger straight rule. Has extended trig scales and log log scales. Has doubled CI scale (EI), linear V1 and V2 scales (for right triangles), G scale for stadia calculations, and extended spiral C and D scales (equivalent to 50 inch length). HOW PICKETT EYE-SAVER SLIDE RULES SAVE EYESTRAIN -- AID ACCURACY Chromatic aberration tests establish that Angstrom "5600" is the point on the spectrum for optimum eye-ease. Pickett Eye-Saver yellow green exactly duplicates this color value. REDUCES EYE FATIGUE- Reds put the image behind, blues put the image in front of the retina. Eye-Saver "5600" puts the image on the retina and absorbs the actinic rays which produce "tired eyes." AIDS ACCURACY- The contrast of graduations, and legends with Eye-Saver "5600" is sharp and distinct. Positioning of the slider and cursor is more exact and the reduction of fatigue combine to avoid error and improve precision setting and reading.
